ARTIST STATEMENT
My works in this exhibition are a glimpse into how I interpret the natural world in watercolor. I am a “curious observer” and have always been an artist, writer, and maker. Ideas? -- I've got a million of them!
My heart is in painting watercolors, and I have a love of botanical art, striving for a painterly realism in my work. The paintings here are largely from photos I’ve taken in the forest, my yard and garden – as well as supermarket produce and some interesting “odds and ends” around my home. A few of the paintings are inspired by my interest in foraging wild edibles, which lends yet another layer to learning new ways of seeing, and how to better convey my observations in my paintings.
Living with the Allegheny National Forest on my doorstep, I love to find beautiful leaves, acorns, flowers and fungi. If it has an interesting perspective, I want to photograph it – and paint it! The cosmos flowers in my painting “Beautiful Day” inherit their name from the Greek word “kosmos” denoting order and harmony; it’s my hope that you get a sense of that when you view my watercolors.
So here you have it. In portraying nature’s own artistry, I appreciate this opportunity to share with you my vision of a particular subject or scene by preserving its beauty, crystallized in a curiously perfect moment.
