Laura Minor
Celestial Bodies

Laura Minor is a contemporary artist based in Western New York, whose work explores themes of motherhood, femininity, and the historical roles of women in society. With a background in traditional photography, Minor has recently expanded her artistic practice to include the historic cyanotype process, which she taught herself in 2019.

Minor's current series, "Celestial Bodies," represents a significant shift in both subject matter and technique from her earlier work. Previously focused on land use in Western New York, her artistic journey took a new direction following the birth of her child. This life-changing event inspired Minor to explore the complexities of motherhood and female identity through a unique blend of digital and analog photographic techniques.

In "Celestial Bodies," Minor combines archival images of women from the late 19th and early 20th centuries with celestial imagery, creating thought-provoking cyanotypes that challenge viewers to reconsider societal expectations placed on women and mothers. Her work has been exhibited in galleries such as the Crary Art Gallery, showcasing her ability to merge historical processes with contemporary themes.

Visions of the National Parks and Beyond

VIEW FULL IMAGES AND TITLES HERE

This collective exhibition features more than seventy works by six acclaimed regional artists:

THOMAS ANNEAR
WENDY BALE
ANGELA CALEY
JAMES HOGGARD
TOM JANIK
THOMAS PAQUETTE

This exhibition takes viewers on a quintessential American journey—an expedition of discovery, wonder, and contemplation of our treasured and varied national parks. The artworks here capture both the grandeur and quiet beauty of our national parks and monuments and adjacent landscapes, from the nature-sculpted landscapes of Utah, the steaming geysers of Yellowstone and the rugged ice-capped peaks of the Grand Tetons, back to iconic parks in the East like Acadia and Great Smoky Mountains. More than mere celebrations of nature, these works are personal testaments by artists who were moved by the richness of the places kept intact as national parks, preserved for the benefit of the entire country.

Working in a rich variety of media and sizes, the artists engage the splendor of the parks through black-and-white and color photography; paintings in oil, gouache, acrylic, and mixed media; and cut paper pieces.

Judith Peck

The Gravitas of Old Trees

I am obsessed with a certain ancient sycamore tree living by the Potomac River. At minimum I have visited it weekly throughout the five years I’ve lived nearby. Recently it crept into my subconscious and I began to paint it. I’ve tried to paint its dignity and majesty as well the small deaths and growth, the resilience that is apparent in the face of drought, flooding, erosion, pollution and wind conditions. This series of paintings sometimes include a figure that in different ways contrast and reflect the very nature of the tree. In this group of work, titled “The Gravitas of the Sycamore” I find a microcosm of earth as well as a symbol of our lives.

Terri Yacovelli

The Art of Color

Terri Yacovelli's artistic journey took an unexpected turn during the pandemic when mixing color swatches became a meditative studio practice. This experience reignited her passion for color theory, leading to a deep exploration of hues, values, and saturation. Her work evolved to include monochromatic paintings that explore the interplay of warm and cool tones, as well as more dramatic pieces juxtaposing saturated colors against muted backgrounds. Terri's fascination with the emotional impact of color has significantly enriched her artistic practice. She views color as a powerful communication tool, capable of influencing mood and evoking a range of emotions. This interest led her to pursue an Arts in Health certification through Penn State Geisinger, further deepening her understanding of Color Psychology, Art Wellness, Integrative Health, and Neuro Arts.

Picture
As an advocate for the healing power of art, Terri believes in its potential for exploration, self-expression, and wellness. Her colorful abstract works, primarily created using the encaustic medium, invite viewers to engage with and contemplate the profound effects of color. Through her art, Terri aims to share her passion and encourage a thoughtful consideration of color's role in our lives and well-being.
