Belinda Brohn — Sashaying with Nature
Jumping up to catch fire flies…Collapsing on cool grass to gaze up at the sky… Breathing in the scent of the air just before it rains… These types of observations have shaped my world. They spring forth from my Gypsy blood and flow into my artwork, captivating my creative spirit. I believe it’s vital to see wonderment in the world Depicting landscapes tends to be the painting theme I gravitate toward.

Beginning each painting are a couple of considerations to ponder - the rhythm of the composition and the mood for the imagination to perceive. Contrary to what I was taught in college, I rarely do preliminary sketches or studies for my paintings. I arrange it all in my head. Secondly I lay a ghost of an outline down on the canvas. Next, while building up layers of color and texture, a balancing act occurs between sticking with my initial plan and spontaneously digressing. Paint often has its own suggestions of how it should ebb along and it is important to be responsive to it. When finishing the work - my favorite part - is to add the fine details. Lately I’ve been enjoying the challenges of working with gouache paint. But to keep creativity seasoned, I do change things by working in other mediums, different perspective styles, or going from miniature to larger sized paintings. Variety is the spice of life that satisfies the Gypsy soul within me.
